Ron Paul: Bitcoin could 'destroy the dollar'
"There will be alternatives to the dollar, and this might be one of them," said former U.S. congressman Ron Paul. If people start using bitcoins en masse, "it'll go down in history as the destroyer of the dollar," Paul added.
More and more press. A serious press madhouse lately. Mainstream media is all over digital currency as it should be. This is going to change everything, like cell phones or the internet changed communication this is a paradigm shift for currency.

Political donations in virtual currency debate ongoing.
Forbes ran a article stating the government would be discussing the issue further.
The Conservative Action Fund asked the FEC to decide whether PACs could accept Bitcoin donations.
Senator Mark Warner said that he’s been “following Bitcoin for months” but is only now “wrapping his head around it.” He then remarked offhandedly that the Federal Election Committee recently approved Bitcoin for political donations. But he’s incorrect.

Wall Street Journal mentions Cryptsy and Hobonickels
In a write up of the proliferation of altcoins coming on the heels of bitcoin success, the WSJ gave a plug to Cryptsy and Hobnickels.
That is amazing HBN was my brainchild and the first coin project I worked on. Nice to see it getting spotted out in the world.

NewYork considers Bitcoin Licensing
New York State Department of Financial Services announced it will be holding a public hearing on virtual currency regulation.
In August 2013, the New York State Department of Financial Services (NYDFS) issued a public notice that it has launched an inquiry into the appropriate regulatory guidelines for virtual currencies.
The release states. "Additionally, the hearing is also expected to consider the possibility and feasibility of NYDFS issuing a ‘BitLicense’ specific to virtual currency transactions and activities, which would include anti-money laundering and consumer protection requirements for licensed entities."
They claim this is for our safety and will help manage the spread of Bitcoin.
"BITlicense" would require consumer protection services, as well as anti-money laundering requirements, designed to make the currency less useful in cases of fraud and criminal activity.
uhm.. im sorry now we will have to pay . exactly who to use this free open source peer to peer service?
oh oh wait... ic its a national security issue
As the Department of Finance put it, "it is in the long-term interest of the virtual currency industry to put in place appropriate guardrails that protect consumers, root out illegal activity, and safeguard our national security."
i call bullshit... sounds like a regular oldschool shakedown. Somebody wants a cut of the pie.. or maybe is scared their bank institution may be under threat.

BTC China is now the biggest Bitcoin exchange, surpassing the likes of Japan,USA and Europe in volume. The man behind this new powerhouse market is none other than BTC China CEO Bobby Lee. Bobby Lee comes from a background including Walmart China and Yahoo.
BTC China is the first Bitcoin exchange in China and has been running since June 2011. Things didnt really start to take off untill Lee became involved. BTC China recently dropped to feeless trading and the market exploded.

GoCoin ready to take Bitcoin to South America and Asia
Recent record Bitcoin prices. The Chinese Bitcoin market exploding with record volume. News stories rampant. Massive amounts of Bitcoin press. Bitcoin ATMs going live.
It looks like we can add another big PR story for Bitcoin. Gocoin is set to take on BitPay as the merchants processing service of choince. Currently in closed beta testing, GoCoin plans to go live later this month.
GoCoin raised some $550,000 to kick off its endeavor. GoCoin initially plans to focus on Asia and South American markets, “where the challenges of accepting credit cards and purchasing goods and services online between even neighboring countries can be especially difficult.”
GoCoin’s board chairman Brock Pierce points out: that as Bitcoin becomes more widely accepted, it will help to simplify cross-border commercial transactions. As shoppers become more global, varying exchange rates become a challenge to manage, and Bitcoin is an easy way to speak a common currency language. Whether or not the virtual currency can gain more traction than what it has now though — especially as its volatility is a cause for concern — is what GoCoin is betting on.
Pierce is confident though. “The future of currency is digital and the old payment systems used today were not designed for the Internet,” he says.

WallStreetJournal Features bitcoin mining story
"Race to Mine Bitcoin Gathers Steam, Rush to Generate Valuable Virtual Currency Fuels Litigation, Regulatory Scrutiny and a Quest for Speed" http://online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424052702303661404579180261683703066
well yah thats great...but really look at this quote.:
"But the rising prices have brought an increased push by so-called miners to use the speediest computers to get more bitcoin."
I am 100% sure this guy thinks people are buying desktops or servers to mine with. I support this by referencing a quote from this guy right after that one he writes:
The power and speed at which the computers attempt to solve the problems and accumulate more bitcoin is measured in the so-called hashrate. Recently, the measure has soared and is now tracked in "petahash," bitcoin experts say.
ok so he writes petahash but references no difficulty increases, nothing about asic, nothing about cloudhasing..
where the hell do they find these damn writers that apparently cant spend an hour researching on google or finding a person in a chat to attempt explain it to them before they go puking bs out in some article. YAY for btc publicity though lol gotta love that.
300$ here we come

Bitcoin hits a record high
A record high for Bitcoin! Wednesday,11/6/13 $272.42 and climbing! That is higher than the $266 peak back in April. Remember that we had a sell off back then within a week dropping prices sub $100. Will we get another sell off? If we do, will you be ready to buy?
Bitcoin will get insane amounts of PR yet again as the price surges repeating last years pattern. Look for a influx of fresh money into the market. This influx will certainly have a % aiming for high risk new startup coins to invest in. Look for some major growth in a few select altcoins.
Worldwide news is driving awareness we have seen recently the announcement of a Chinese bitcoin exchange, BTC china. Bitcoincharts.com BTC China as the market volume leader.
As things continue to look worse worldwide for fiat, cryptocoins are exploding at an exponential rate. New markets open and set record volumes week after week (I am looking at you Cryptsy)
The market moves and changes so fast, missing just a few days of development can cost you a fortune. These are exciting times of change, and it is just getting started.

Finding a new crypto coin to mine for profit
Getting in early when mining a cryptocoin has huge advantages as often the rewards are very high compared to the amount of work required. After a coin hits the market and becomes popular, the number of people mining it goes up reducing the reward amount for each unit of work.

Cryptocoin resources
Having been involved in crypto for a few years i forget how tough it is to break into the field when it is so filled with iformation. I chat with many crypto users and often am surprised when they have missed some recent big news. Even more common is newcomers who have missed some of the histroy of the cryptocoi market and changes over the last few years. Many times i am asked for links to where i find this information. I put together a list of common information resources i use to try and stay up to date with crypto news. Things change so rapidly in crypto, each day presents new opportunity. The opportunities are often very short in time span, staying current is vital.

When our freedoms in the networked world come under attack, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is the first line of defense
With the recent crackdown on the silkroad, and the nsa revealing the extensive monitoring of network activity. You may want to poke around on https://www.eff.org/about and see some of the inside news.

About EFF
From the Internet to the iPod, technologies are transforming our society and empowering us as speakers, citizens, creators, and consumers. When our freedoms in the networked world come under attack, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is the first line of defense. EFF broke new ground when it was founded in 1990—well before the Internet was on most people's radar—and continues to confront cutting-edge issues defending free speech, privacy, innovation, and consumer rights today. From the beginning, EFF has championed the public interest in every critical battle affecting digital rights.
DGC digital coin meltdown
Well it appears that the DGC dev has decided to take drastic action in an attempt to manipulate the price of the coin upward. I doubt this will end well and if i held any DGC i would run run away.. i am sure deep pockets will give a little pump on patch day or the week leading up to it. I would guess dev is a huge bagholder and trying to increase value of the coin so he can dump and run on.
Heres a letter from the dev of Digitalcoin DGC.
Heres a letter from the dev of Digitalcoin DGC.
Intended Changes
Block rewards: Block rewards will be dropping from 20 to 15 per block. The per block value is too high and the removal of the downward pressure will help DGC longterm.
Block rewards: Block rewards will be dropping from 20 to 15 per block. The per block value is too high and the removal of the downward pressure will help DGC longterm.
Block times: Over 50% of current DGC blocks contain no transactions and therefore are unnecessary. Block times have gone from 20 seconds to 40 seconds. This will help combat the inflation while at the same time increasing efficiency by lowering orphans. The additional 20 seconds don’t make much of a difference as one confirmation in 40 seconds is just as secure as 2 confirmations in 40 seconds.
Blocks to retarget: Blocks to retarget will be lowered from 1080 to 108. The upcoming difficulty padding should limit any extreme variance from severely affecting the difficulty. This also makes DGC more robust and more resistant to profit hopping.
These changes should stop the downwards trajectory and allow DGC to appreciate in value with its services and community.
Thank you,
Baritus

Dont blame Bitcoin for the SilkRoad
Why You Can't Blame Bitcoin for Silk Road Shadiness
The man alleged to be "Dread Pirate Roberts," the founder and operator of the Silk Road—an online marketplace where bitcoins were traded for a range of goods and services, including drugs—was arrested by the FBI in San Francisco Wednesday. The criminal complaint, released today, provides many details about how the site and its users relied on widespread anonymity technology, including Tor and Bitcoin.
The increased attention on this technology is a good reminder about how important it is not to blame these tools for the actions of a small portion of their users. The public wouldn't tolerate a campaign to malign the car because of its utility as a getaway vehicle for bank robbers; we must apply the same critical thinking to essential privacy-preserving technology.
In certain parts of the complaint, even the federal agent behind the investigation and the Justice Department attorney in charge of the case acknowledge this. In describing how Tor was required to access the Silk Road (the site was configured as a Tor hidden service), they state that "Tor has known legitimate uses". Similarly, "Bitcoins are not illegal in and of themselves and have known legitimate uses."
Elsewhere the complaint goes astray. For example, it asserts that the suspect's efforts to "'hide the identities of those that run Silk Road' reflect his awareness of the illegal nature of the Silk Road enterprise." Of course, that explanation overlooks the countless lawful reasons why a person would want to engage in anonymous speech—and in the process hide the identities of those behind the technical infrastructure—that don't involve breaking the law.
Similarly, the complaint's description of the bitcoin "tumbler" that the Silk Road employed to obscure the parties involved in each transaction is alarmingly limited. According to the complaint, "the only function served by such 'tumblers' is to assist with the laundering of criminal proceeds." Really, the purpose of a tumbler is to attempt to make a bitcoin transaction as anonymous and private as cash. Certainly one can take issue with Silk Road's use of the technology in particular. It's incredibly dangerous, though, to say that anonymous currency—whether bitcoins or traditional cash—is only of interest to drug dealers or money launderers.
It's essential that the use of encryption, anonymization techniques, and other privacy practices is not deemed a suspicious activity. Rather, it must be recognized as an essential element for practicing freedom of speech in a digital environment.
In some ways, the complaint provides encouragement to those who depend on this technology to engage in speech privately and anonymously. After all, it was human error, and the chance discovery of nine fake ID cards in a routine package inspection at the border, that led to the final round of investigation. This summer's revelations about the NSA's subverting certain cryptographic technologies have definitely heightened fears in the security community. Although there are still some unanswered questions about the investigation, it's a small relief that, for now, those fears weren't confirmed by the criminal complaint.
The point remains, however, that relegating these technologies by associating them only with their criminal use threatens to undermine their ability to enable important, lawful speech.
Unfortunately, we've witnessed that sort of demonization of technology before. We've seen it in attempts to target peer-to-peer protocols because they can be used for copyright infringement; in the outrageous stacking of penalties that can result in decades of possible prison time for violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act; in the original "Crypto Wars" of the 1990s and their reprise today; and in many other places besides.
The allegations against the Silk Road are serious, and may get even more so as the case progresses to formal charges and a trial. But if the government puts undue weight on the suspect's use of technology, instead of the actual crimes of which he is accused, the public will be worse off for it.
